maz, meat chickens are always kept in barns and never cages. That's egg-laying hens. I cannot fricking stand it when chicken companies say "kept in barns, not cages". It's blatantly trying to trick consumers who try and do the right thing. Barn conditions can be bloody awful for chickens.
I'm not as much of an expert on pigs, but yes, the worst is sow stalls. I know some factory farmed pigs are kept indoors with no straw/mud etc which means they can't do what's natural to them. I can vouch that the pigs whilst in the abattoir I saw definitely were crammed in together on concrete floors and boy did they know what was coming. I'll never forget the sadness in the eyes of the ones who were being gassed next. I didn't eat pig products for months after that (this was in high school). My ag teacher told us pigs often start going at it in abattoirs because they know what's happening. I can also vouch for that. They're very smart.

Abused animals do not put on weight and weight gain is a primary focus of any food animal, although I agree that some of the conditions that pigs and chickens are kept in are bad chickens for meat are usually barn raised not caged and with pigs it's more the breeding animals than the actual food animals that are kept in really poor conditions, the ones we eat are actually the lucky ones that have had the better lives.

Those ads where the little 3 year old girl talks about being abused make me cry.
poor little piggies. I've worked with young pigs before, they're so smart. Luckily pork, ham and bacon are all my least favourite meats, followed by chicken. I rarely eat them. (I'm a lamb eater :S) |

I'm not trying to start a debate. I just struggle to understand how people can get so upset over some animals being abused, yet conveniently ignore others. It's like people who get so horrified at the idea of other cultures eating the animals we see as pets. What's the difference? It certainly isn't intelligence, because pigs are as intelligent, if not moreso, than dogs. There's just such a disconnect which I really don't understand. Why get upset about this video and then go and have some meat for dinner which may have been just as abused? I'm pretty sure the animals we eat are not abused. I know a couple of people that worked where they get killed and apparently their deaths are relatively fast. ![]() I'm not just talking about the deaths, although I have been to an abattoir and the state of the pigs left a hell of a lot to be desired. I was more referring to the way the animals are kept prior to being sent to an abattoir. Chickens and pigs in particular. Unless free-range, the animals most certainly are often abused. |
