We have one admin who can do technical stuff, and he works a full time job, often with overtime. A forum like this needs a lot of admin work (as opposed to other forums where you pay a certain amount and it takes care of everything for you). The upside is that it can be heavily modified to suit our needs and the admins have complete control, the downside is that there are a lot of controls and something like this may need a mod installed to fix, and that takes research and time. The other issue is, that it's not necessarily a problem with the forum, it could just be with the settings on your browser. You only asked a couple of days ago and we're aware of the problem, give us time, believe it or not we have lives outside the internet - and I wouldn't be pointing that out if the forum wasn't in general, running smoothly, most people are very happy with the way the forum is running.

Anyway, to help Duke diagnose the problem, we need more feedback from people, is anyone else still experiencing this issue?

BarraKudaRodentry , I've been lurking behind the scenes to check for flaws in the forum that might be causing this problem.
Other users have had similar issues, but it was singled to their actions and/or computer use.

Are you logging onto the forum from mulitple computers? i.e. at work, or on your partner/siblings computer?
Do you access the site via a bookmark, or are you typing in the address manually?
Do you use Firefox or Internet Explorer? If you tell me which, and what version you're using, I can offer some solutions that might help.
In your browser click the Help menu, followed by About Internet Explorer (or About Mozilla Firefox).
If you're a bit tech savvy, you can try some solutions yourself:
Clearing the cache
Delete your temp folder
Delete the cookie for Australian Rat Forum
If you have your browser set to remember your password, try clearing it, too.

If all of this is alien to you, that's okay. I'll walk you through it all once I know which browser you're using.

Regards,
Duke

Mostly at home, the past few days when I have been having problems its been at home Smiley

Do you access the site via a bookmark, or are you typing in the address manually?
I type in "aus" then click on the website link in the drop down box

Internet Explorer 8

In your browser click the Help menu, followed by About Internet Explorer (or About Mozilla Firefox).

Clearing the cache
Delete your temp folder
Delete the cookie for Australian Rat Forum
If you have your browser set to remember your password, try clearing it, too.

I'll try this when I get home, I've logged on with another computer and all the posts have come up Smiley So maybe it was a problem with my home computer Smiley

Hetty, the only reason I posted multiple times was to let you guys know how often it was happening for me so you could help (me) fix it, I got worried  when I didnt recieve a reply for a few days thats all.

Thanks for the info.
Make sure that you're accessing the site via http://australianratforum.com or http://australianratforum.com/index.php only. Any extra code in the url may affect your browsing history.

Now, for some troubleshooting.

Firstly, logout of the forum, and close your browser before you proceed. It's not majorly important, but it'll help.

Here's a good, simple guide for clearing your cache in IE8
http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser%27s-Cache#Internet_Explorer_8
just make sure that when you click on Delete Browsing History, that only "Temporary Internet Files" is selected.

Close Internet Explorer after you've deleted the cache (temporary internet files).

And here's another guide for deleting cookies:
http://www.findmysoft.com/how-to/Selectively-Delete-Cookies-in-Internet-Explorer-8/
At Step 6, you'll see a large list of all your cookies. Try and find the AustralianRatForum.com ones, and delete them. There should be three or four entries.
Again, once you've deleted the cookies, close your browser.

And that's all for now. Let me know if you have any difficulty understanding the instructions, or if the problem persists after doing so.

Regards,
Duke.

Sorry, we should have at least written something in the thread to let you know we were looking into it. Just understand that our resources are limited, we're happy to give up our time and money to run this forum but we have lives outside the internet, so if something happens we can't always get onto it straight away.

Good luck with the troubleshooting and let us know what happens.

Very odd, but the "show unread posts" feature isn't there at all at the moment. I'm borrowing a friend's laptop and using a different mobile connection, but I've been doing this all week and the problem hasn't happened before. I'll logout and restart, and clear the temp files, to see if this sorts it.

EDIT: The other odd thing is that I can now modify my posts well after the previous 5 minute limit. Is this an intentional change? Smiley

That's very strange, I have seen it there all day, and I have been using different computers in different suburbs.

You might like to try logging in on a friend's computer to test if it is something to do with your computer's settings.

YAY! Problem solved!

At the top right hand corner of the screen when you log in, there's a button with a - sign on it. You can see it under the log out option when you are on the home page. I'd never noticed it before. If you click it, the options for members are hidden, and the sign becomes a +. This indicates that by clicking the + sign, you can expand user options again, including access to "show unread posts".

I'd never noticed that button before. Also, I'd never realised how useful the "show unread posts" function was until I didn't have it. It's back again now. Smiley Mystery resolved!!
